Grateful Dead Barton Hall

book design & layout

The  Grateful Dead performed at Barton Hall in Ithaca, NY on May 8th, 1977. Deadheads say it was their best show of all time. Larry Reichman—one of only two photographers to capture the images—reached out to Avenue West, seeking to transform his black and white stills of this legendary event into a beautiful photo book.

Designing for an iconic band

Photographer Larry Reichman shot hundreds of photos of this 1977 concert. Together we combed through the images, creating a visual narrative of this legendary night.

We organized the book into three sections: Set Up, Set One and Set Two, taking the reader through the concert, from the sound check to encore.

In collaboration with the printer, Larry and I chose the paper, color palettes and binding style to create the ideal look and feel of this coffee table book.

What they said

“Artistically presented and beautifully nuanced by Reichman and co-designer Hannah Westerman”
